Our Chicks
At the beginning of this journey, I wanted to ensure healthy diet for our children. They needed protein and vegetables to ensure a healthy development. About 16 months ago, I had the idea to raise our own chickens and grow our own vegetables. The question was “where to start”.
I shared my thoughts with Moses, my driver and translator, and he brought in Geoffrey. This man has so much knowledge about chickens and garden. We put together a budget and the plan to build the room for the chickens. I had no idea about raising chicks but he did. He suggested “layer chickens” because they produce eggs for 16 months after which we could sell their meat. I thought all chicks were created equal!. We secured the funds with some of our donors and the project started. Geoffrey spent few weeks building the room for our new guests!
The first 100 chicks arrived at the end of January 2019 on a Thursday morning, they were just one day old. Geoffrey had everything prepared, including charcoal to produce a warm environment and light. I woke up very early on Friday to see how our new additions were doing. To my surprise, I found Geoffrey sleeping on the floor, next to the chicks. I couldn’t believe his level of commitment to the success of the project. He said the charcoal had to be constantly burning or the chicks could die. He said to me that he felt this project as his own project. Geoffrey is very dedicated, humble, organized and a great addition to our little St. Joseph’s family.
We have enough eggs for the children and staff, and we are selling the surplus in the local market. Our production is around 80 eggs per day. The surplus is helping us cover some of our expenses.
Fast forward, all 100 chickens are alive and approaching the time when their eggs production will diminish, and they will be ready to be sold after we save some for the children.
I wish we could double the number of chickens to help us with our expenses. I trust the funds will come because this mission is the Lord’s mission and we are in His hands. Thanks to people like you.
Please don’t forget to visit our website. You will find there more information about this mission and how to become part of it.
Blessings,
-Morella
