Babirye, the name given to the first born twin in Uganda, came into the world one month ago. Unfortunately, her mother is struggling with mental illness and is currently raising six children on her own. Due to her mental health challenges, the mother’s family made the difficult decision to remove her older five children from her care.
The community informed us about Babirye’s desperate situation. Unfortunately, Babirye’s twin sister lost her life when their mother prematurely discharged her from the hospital, removing her IV. Babyrie was left unattended for hours without nourishment or care. Residents in the area could hear the sound of the baby’s cries coming from the poorly ventilated house.
Upon our arrival at their home, we witnessed the mother in a state of distress, prompting the involvement of law enforcement. The newborn girl was found in critical condition, with her umbilical cord severely compromised. We swiftly transported her to the hospital. She is now receiving treatment for infection. Babyrie will remain in our care as we work towards formulating a plan to eventually reunite her with her family. Since we already have another set of twins with the same name, we will call her by her second name, Akisana.
We bathed and dressed her like the princess she is going to be!
