Caring today, creating hope for tomorrow
Every child’s journey with Stars Uganda moves through five stages: rescue from harm, nourishment in a safe home, early education, emotional healing, and finally, reunification with family.
Rescue
Out of every 1,000 births in Uganda, 47 babies will not live to age five. Countless children are the innocent victims of the extreme poverty affecting over 41% of the population in Uganda. Often, as a result of parents living with mental illness, one or both parents dying from illness due to lack of health care or parents not having the education needed to provide for their families, children are malnourished, abused and/or neglected.
StarsUganda intercedes in the tough situations and removes children from homes that are found to be unsafe and unsupportive of healthy development.
Nourish
Children are welcomed into our transition home, known as Saint Joseph’s Shining Little Stars. Here they receive not only shelter but daily nutrition, medical treatment, and the emotional support needed to stabilise their lives. They are loved. They are protected.
Much of this nourishment comes directly from our own land. Our chickens and garden supply food for children and staff, while the sale of eggs provides a source of income for the home. Every meal, every harvest, and every act of care helps restore children’s bodies and give them the strength to grow.
Educate
Ninety percent of a child’s brain function develops in the first five years of life. That’s why education at Stars Uganda begins the moment children arrive.
Our approach is rooted in play, music, and creativity. Children sing, explore age-appropriate books, and play with toys that spark imagination. The Garden of St. Anne, our beautiful outdoor playground, gives space for children to run, climb, and learn social skills.
Heal
Many children who come to us have experienced trauma and fear. Healing begins with love, consistency, and care.
From the moment a child enters our home, they are embraced by caregivers who help them feel safe again. Slowly, children begin to smile, laugh, and play without fear. With time, they learn that adults can be trusted, and that they are worthy of love and belonging.
This emotional healing is as vital as food or medicine. It gives children the chance to enjoy childhood again.
Reunify
While children find stability in our home, our social workers begin preparing families for reunification. The process starts with careful evaluation: is the home safe, and can it provide stability? Families then receive parenting guidance, family planning support, and vocational training in skills such as tailoring, gardening, or hairdressing.
When ready, children begin visiting their families during the day for two weeks. If this is successful, they return home permanently with ongoing support. Each family receives bedding, food distributions, and school fees paid directly to the nearest school. A social worker visits monthly to ensure children continue to thrive.
If reunification isn’t possible by the age of six, or no relatives can be found, Ugandan law allows children to be adopted by a local family. In every case, the goal is the same: for each child to grow up in a loving, safe and permanent home.
